What are the messages from the Havelock North Inquiry to date?

Annual Conference

Three main issues arise from the Havelock enquiry to date: (1) communication; (2) understanding risk assessment; (3) the importance of system maintenance.

Understanding the associated technical issues is important in all three topics, as may be inferred from the Enquiry. For example:

- Issue (1) Develop a common understanding among all parties of at least an outline of key technical details (e.g., zoonoses, potential pathogen sources);

- Issue (2) Consider all six steps of a (quantitative or qualitative) risk assessment:

  • set the risk context;
  • identify hazards (i.e., potential pathogens, including animal sources);
  • examine exposure to those pathogens;
  • select appropriate dose-response relationships;
  • present risk profiles;
  • communicate the risks and associated uncertainties.
  • - Issue (3) “Know your catchment” and “know your system”.
