WasteMINZ 28th annual conference

Conference

Too Good To Waste is the theme for the 28th annual WasteMINZ conference.

The theme builds upon our recent work on food waste, most notably through our Love Food Hate Waste campaign. This work has shown us that food waste is a major issue in New Zealand. Every time we throw out food – our bread crusts or last night’s leftovers – it adds up.

The same can be said of the many waste streams we all encounter on a daily basis. It might seem like just a few plastic bottles here and a box of polystyrene there, but all of this ‘waste’ has taken huge amounts of resources to produce. Should we really be wasting it? Surely we can do better?

Let’s explore how, through collective action, we can do a better job. We firmly believe that waste is an action, rather than a thing. It’s only waste if we make it so.

WasteMINZ gala dinner: The gala dinner will be held on Wednesday 19 October at the TSB Bank Arena as part of our conference proceedings. The Gala Dinner is a great chance for our industry to get together, catch up with friends, kick up our heels and have a great time! As part of this we want to ensure that we bring some fun elements to proceedings, a key part of this is our theme which in 2016 is Op Shop .

So what do we mean by Op Shop? They have many names, be it charity store, thrift shop, or hospice store. These social enterprises do a fantastic job of raising money for good causes, while also giving goods a second life. So head along to your local one, and grab a glam outfit at a bargain basement price. There will be a prize for the best dressed!!

WasteMINZ Awards for Excellence: Also at the Gala Dinner we will be presenting the WasteMINZ Awards for Excellence. There will be four awards presented on the night, these are.

1. Best expo site (Judged from those exhibiting at the conference)

2. Best written paper (Judged from papers presented at the conference)

3. Best communication, engagement or education initiative (Judged from applicants)

4. Best project or initiative in the commercial or public sectors (Judged from applicants)

For each award we will announce three finalists in the lead up to the conference, with the winners being announced at the Gala Dinner. Applications are now open and close on Friday 9 September.
