Nominations for the 2021 Water New Zealand Excellence Awards are now open!

We are seeking nominations for seven awards – from celebrating and acknowledging innovation and excellence in projects and health and safety to outstanding contributions by young water professionals and trainees. This year we are introducing a new award, the Environmental Sustainability Project Award, to reflect the changing focus of the sector and highlight the importance of protecting the Mauri of the Wai.

We are accepting poster abstracts for the Water New Zealand Conference & Expo 2021 until Wednesday 28 July. This poster session will be held during the first lunch break of the conference, and this year delegates will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite poster.

Backflow Conference 2021 

5-6 August | Lower Hutt

We are less than two weeks away from the 2021 Backflow Conference and right on time with the changes happening in the sector. You will hear from Taumata Arowai – the new water services regulator who will discuss the new drinking water standards and how they affect suppliers. You will also be able to attend the backflow training refresher workshop, learn about the new training standards and meet with your peers.

This two-day conference will take place in Lower Hutt from 5-6 August 2021.

Water New Zealand and our event partner, Avenues Events Management are delighted that our Water New Zealand Conference and Expo 2020 has just been named as a finalist in the Best Covid-19 Response for an Event at the 2021 NZ Events Association New Zealand Event Awards. We are extremely proud to have been named as a finalist, especially as there were a record number of entries this year with a quarter of them competing in this category.

Government offers $2.5b to support local government transition through reforms to water service delivery

In the latest step in the Government's three waters reforms, Prime Minister Jacinda Arden announced a cash injection to councils as part of the proposals to establish four new water service entities.

Natural and Built Environments Bill submissions closing soon

Public submissions are now being called for the Inquiry on the Natural and Built Environments Bill: Parliamentary Paper. The closing date for submissions is 11.59 pm on Wednesday, 04 August 2021. This inquiry is the first part of reforming the resource management system, and replacing the Resource Management Act 1991 with three pieces of legislation.

Consultation - Preventing harm from hydrogen sulphide

WorkSafe New Zealand is currently developing a new guidance document for preventing harm from hydrogen sulphide. The quick guide is aimed at supporting persons conducting a business or undertaking work that may expose workers and other people to hydrogen sulphide. It provides practical advice on how the health and safety risks arising from exposure to hydrogen sulphide can be minimised. This includes the use of respiratory protective equipment, and exposure and health monitoring.

Three Waters Pipe Portal Update

For the last couple of years, the Building Innovation Partnership (BIP) has been working closely with local councils, contractors and consultants to develop a national data standard for 3 waters pipes, valves and chambers. This Code of Practice (CoP) is the basis of the National Pipe Data Portal and associated work including automated validation of as-built data in conjunction with 12D and a data quality framework and tool in collaboration with the RATA team at the Waikato LASS.

Water Engineers’ Perspective on Interactions with Māoridom in Water Management and Solutions

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Auckland would like to invite you to participate in a research project ' Water Engineers’ Perspective on Interactions with Māoridom in Water Management and Solutions’. Eligibility to participate in this anonymous survey includes being a qualified water engineer working in New Zealand. The survey is designed to be completed in under 10 minutes and is completely anonymous, no IP addresses will be tracked or recorded.

Progress on Freshwater Investment Recommendations 

In September 2019, The Office of the Auditor General (OAG) released an audit report on how well the Ministry for the Environment was administering Crown investment in freshwater clean-up projects. The full response from the Ministry for the Environment on how it has responded to recommendations made by OAG is now available.
