ABSTRACT
CONTEXT
Rainfall in the Auckland region is varied, and local rainfall accumulations of 20mm/hour are not uncommon. The region comprises 233 stormwater catchments. Many of these catchments have steep gradients, cover a small area and drain to the coast, resulting in localized stormwater flooding with a very short response time to rainfall - i.e. flash flooding. Across the region approximately 105,000 buildings are exposed to floodplains, overland flow paths or flood prone areas – 20% of Auckland’s building stock.
