Identifying commonalities in Integrated Catchment Management approaches to address flood risk, environmental and social outcomes across urban catchments in Aotearoa New Zealand.

LIAM FOSTER & KENYA ASHCROFT

POSTER ABSTRACT

The poster compares five separate catchment management approaches applied in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington to identify similarities that have delivered successful outcomes.

These similarities are then assessed against the NZS9401 for Managing Flood Risk and the UN Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 - 2030 to compare how aligned catchment management delivery is with existing standards and international best practice approaches.

What are the gaps in the approaches evaluated? What were the tangible outcomes and decisions made at projet inception that led to these? What could be achieved with wider scope and or funding?

The current operational environment pushes for low cost, quick outcome delivery. This dual urgency for successful long term outcomes within this context provides quick wins while furthering this korero about what’s needed for proactive, stable long term management.
