Abstract for water conference presentation: Improving manganese removal using ozone and ultrafiltration - A visit to China to buy water filters and other things

Annual Conference

In March 2008 Steve Thrush from Central Hawke’s Bay District Council (CHBDC) and Roger Hu from Infracon Ltd visited China. The main purpose of the trip was to investigate replacement ultra-filtration cartridges for water treatment plants. However much more was found on the trip that is applicable to local authority works. This included water tanks, aerators, pumps, filtration systems, ozone generators, relocatable buildings, safety equipment, signs, and tyres. CHBDC has two ultrafiltration water treatment plants. New filters and a new package plant have been installed, and ozone added to oxidise manganese before filtration. This equipment has proved be very cost effective and operationally effective. Manganese removal to below aesthetic limits is now being achieved. In addition new aerators have been installed on oxidation ponds. These are all from China.

This presentation discusses the results from using ozone and ultra-filtration membranes to remove manganese from water. However the presentation will mainly show how looking for treatment equipment in China can be interesting and rewarding.
