The Three Waters and Waste Unit provides drinking water, waste water and storm water services to over 385,000 people in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula. Our vision is to manage water and waste to sustain life and protect our environment. We have seven water supply schemes, one large for Christchurch and Lyttelton Harbour, and six small schemes on Banks Peninsula. To assist us in achieving our strategic priority of ensuring a high quality drinking water supply that is safe and sustainable, we have the new position of Water Supply Security Specialist.

In this role you will work as the council's principal expert in the field of drinking water safety, ensuring that we supply safe drinking water to our residents and businesses. You will be responsible for preparing water safety plans under the new Ministry of Health framework. You will also lead the implementation of the improvement programme arising from these, which is critical to ensuring ongoing compliance and our commitment to providing safe drinking water.

Your focus will include stakeholder engagement, working across the Council and with external contractors to improve how we manage our drinking water. You will have the ability to influence positive outcomes and build trusted key stakeholder relationships. Your technical capabilities will see you as a go-to person, an expert in delivering safe drinking water. People will see you as a trusted partner and will look to you - providing you the opportunity to share your knowledge.

To be successful in this role you will need to have an engineering or science qualification and be a subject matter expert on drinking water. You will have extensive experience, including several years in a similar environment. Your softer skills will include the ability to influence and maintain positive working relationships, and being approachable and collaborative. You will have excellent communication skills and have the ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.
