Ko wai mātou | About us

Taumata Arowai was established on 1 March 2021 as one of the three pou (pillars) of the Government’s 2020 Three Waters reform programme as a result of the review of the Havelock North incident.   We are a Crown agency and will become the new water regulator for Aotearoa New Zealand when the Water Services Bill is enacted, expected to be in the second half of 2021.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

This is a hybrid role – not only will you work at a national level from Wellington to build awareness and achieve compliance, particularly with water suppliers in large metropolitan areas; you will also undertake operational regulatory activities at a regional level for the Nelson Marlborough area.     

In each instance, you will work closely with water suppliers to provide information and advice to build their capability and manage risk.  Using a range of regulatory tools, you will be involved in monitoring and auditing both metropolitan and smaller urban or local water supplies.  You will also work closely with key stakeholders including iwi Maori, the rural sector and water customers.  At times, you may be involved in emergency response incidents across the motu. 

Ko koe tēnei | About you

We are looking for someone who knows the NZ water sector and has a qualification in environmental and/or public health.  You will know about applying contemporary regulatory tools and risk frameworks and have experience providing operational advice to reduce harm.   You will need enhanced relationship management and communication skills to build credibility and engage effectively and be comfortable working with a wide range of people and communities.

While this position is based in Wellington, a current driver’s licence and ability to travel domestically are required.
