We are currently seeking an experienced and qualified Water Resources Scientist to join our dynamic and dedicated Natural Resources Science Team which provides environmental scientific information, advice and expertise in relation to freshwater, coastal, air and soil resources.

The diversity of our business makes for a fascinating and challenging range of science and research opportunities. This role will focus on providing expertise in water resource management by leading council's freshwater allocation programmes.

From looking after our fresh and coastal waters to protecting Northland from pests; the range of environmental work is vast. In this newly created position, you will be responsible for leading water resources workstreams including investigations suitable for resource management evaluation and allocation purposes, delivering advanced data analysis and scientific interpretation contributing to the preparation, implementation and reporting on freshwater resources, manage council's freshwater quantity accounting system and deliver on data analysis as per the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management requirements, and ensure council's reporting of water allocation is accurate and timely.

By joining the Natural Resources Science team, you'll have the opportunity to be part of a high performing and multidisciplinary team delivering environmental scientific advice and expertise supporting evidence-based policy development and decision-making for the sustainable management of our freshwater resources.

Do you have what it takes and are you up for it?

We are looking for someone who can bring the following to our diverse talent pool:

  • You will have a postgraduate qualification in Environmental Science, specialising in water resources management; have at least five years' experience in a similar role, and an in-depth understanding of freshwater systems including issues affecting both resource quality and quantity.
  • You will have previous work experience in the implementation of the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management and associated requirements.
  • You will demonstrate significant experience in the development and management of freshwater resource projects.
  • You will have sound budgeting control, reporting and effective project planning and management skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, preferably with MS Office, GIS, relevant databases, statistical, modelling and data visualisation software.
