Advances in Stormwater Management: Fusion of Numerical Modelling and Internet of Things

Webinar

The series of annual flood disasters that struck Japan in recent years pose challenges to urban stormwater management. Several research studies have been conducted related to the prediction of urban flooding. However, challenges remain in validating numerical models, especially in predicted flow condition in stormwater drainages, as observations within drainage networks are limited.

Here, an example research study is presented to apply IoT devices in urban stormwater management. By installing manhole antennas that transmit observed water levels and store the information on the internet cloud, the status of the drainage network can be monitored in real-time. And also the data can be used to improve the accuracy of the integrated urban flood model prediction that we have been developing.

Real-time observations and model predictions can be used as referring information to support decision-making in stormwater management.
