Kai Tak River - Revitalising the Water into an Urban Green River Corridor in Hong Kong

Webinar

Kai Tak River is a major drainage channel in the East Kowloon region of Hong Kong, collecting stormwater from the hinterland and secondary-treated effluent from a wastewater treatment plant and discharging to the Victoria Harbour.

The drainage capacity of the river was inadequate to meet the current floor protection standard and the nearby areas were susceptible to flooding during heavy rainstorms. To reduce the flooding risk of these areas, the Drainage Services Department (DSD) of Hong Kong Government commenced the drainage improvements works for the 1.1km long river since 2011 for completion in 2018. The main river channel was deepened by 1m, and a 400m long box culvert was constructed alongside the river at the bottleneck section to increase the drainage capacity. In addition, DSD strived to revitalise the Kai Tak River into an attractive urban green river corridor, by introducing the concept of blue-green infrastructures for sustainability. Greening and ecological elements were added to the revitalisation of the river.
