YWP Christchurch Event - Bromley Wastewater Treatment Plant Site Visit

Networking

The Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant (CWTP) officially opened in 1962. However, from 1882, it was a sewage disposal farm. Recently, it has been the cause of many conversation starters both in and around Christchurch; however, there’s a lot more to see behind the gates. The plant consists of step screens, grit removal, primary sedimentation, activated sludge (formerly trickling filters), clarification and disinfection in the form of oxidation ponds. Over the last two years, a lot has changed in the plant due to a large fire, which meant critical equipment could no longer be used. Quick thinking meant the existing structures and processes could be used to change the trickling filter plant into an activated sludge plant in the space of six months.

This event will consist of a short presentation about the history of the plant and the process. Come behind closed doors where limited people have been and take a deep dive into the process and how we manage to receive, treat and discharge 3 m3/s of wastewater 24/7 without breaking consent.
