The Water New Zealand Modelling Symposium is an annual event that brings together modellers from all sectors of the water industry.

Modelling Symposium typically features:

  • Two-day symposium with a selection of keynote and invited speakers, scientific and technical papers, case studies and workshops.
  • Site tours
  • Networking opportunities, including the welcome dinner.

A more detailed programme will be made available early 2022.

This year the Modelling Group will be celebrating 22 years of being in existence and the committee will be pulling together a diverse programme that covers the last 22 years as well as the future needs of modelling in the New Zealand water industry.     Wellington is in the orange of the covid protection framework and at this level at this level the Modelling Symposium can take place for fully vaccinated attendees only.

    In addition, Rydges Wellington, where the Symposium is being held, has implemented the COVID vaccination requirement across the site for employees, contractors, suppliers and all visitors.

    Judy Lawrence

    Judy Lawrence

    Judy is well-versed with water management and climate change science in public policy and decision-making currently focusing on climate change adaptation as a Senior Research Fellow at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington. Judy has led Deep South Science Challenge research projects on cascading climate change impacts and adaptive tools and measures. Judy currently is undertaking research on the application of decision support tools such as dynamic adaptive pathways planning (DAPP), land use planning and economic assessment tools, and monitoring in coastal settings under the Enabling Coastal Adaptation project of the Resilience Science Challenge and the SeaRise Endeavour programme, working with practitioners and decision makers.

    Judy works closely with international colleagues globally and she tailored the Dutch Sustainable Delta Game for New Zealand use as the NZ River and NZ Coastal Games for priming decision making under conditions of uncertainty and change.

    Judy career in the New Zealand public service has spanned water and soil conservation, resource management, climate change and social policy. She has a PhD in Public Policy and a Masters in geomorphology. Judy is currently a Climate Change Commissioner.
